Leaving Home

I have been wanting to write about this for awhile. OK only a month but sitting down and writing in my blog was top priority. So before leaving to Mexico last month I read this story on this zero waste market in Austin. Which led me to research about them and i found out that these “new stores” are popping up world wide, As I read the description of them I was enchanted not because of this great new concept but because people are realizing the brilliance of the pioneers and as a child, and if i am honest sometimes as an adult, I envied Laura Ingalls Wilder and the stuff I read reminded me of Oleson’s store and how Laura and her mom always came with their basket and all the purchases were packaged in paper. I know its not exactly zero waste but its better than plastic. Later that week something about zero waste markets stayed with me. How these stores are being covered and spoken about as if its a new concept when in reality its very old and many countries still have ways to shop with little to know waste. In the US try going to farms or farmers markets.In Mexico its all about the Mercados. Although in Merida they have vendors who use plastic bags and plastic wrap I have a feeling that its because they know they get a lot of tourist who want their goods to travel. The stuff that you would use for house and are not meant to travel are not wrapped. You have the meat section where the butcher hangs his goods on hooks, or the fruits that are open. Every local had reusable bags that I remember as child. Grains are in barrels that are weighed and wrapped in brown paper.
